The way Katie got her name has a unique story behind it. She was born in our pasture with my pony, Sugar, a gelding, Buck,
and of course her mommy, Suzie. Well, she was barely up and walking around (about an hour old) when Buck decided to come
over and see baby. Mom didn't like that idea and turned around to kick at him. Well wouldn't you know it, Katie would decide
that at that moment she needed to be near mom! Suzie picked up her leg to kick at Buck and hit Katie with her hock. Katie
went down "for the count" so to speak. Mom never got the kick off so Katie was fine just got knocked down. We
picked her up and carried her to the corral, which of course was on the other side of the 3.94 acres. When we got her to
the corral and put her down, she got right up and wandered around to visit all the people. Mom was so worried about Katie,
which happened to be her first baby, that she wouldn't let her out of her site. Whenever Katie would try to nurse mom was
step away because she couldn't see Katie. We finally had to step in and hold mom and point Katie to the direction of the
milk. After the first time, mom figured out she only wanted food so we never had a problem again. Her owner named her Knock
Out and now you know the story behind it! We called her KO, K, and Knockers for short.
Her barn name, Katie, came about when she was 6. She was in our pasture with two other horses named Sassy (her aunt)
and Patty. My friends and I had went riding and were joking around. I said, "we should call Knock Out Katie because
the ending (e sound) is the same as in Patty (e sound) and Sassy (e sound)." After that, it sort of stuck and she has
been known as Katie ever since.
